Regulator to decide on large municipal electricity hikes

About nine million South Africans - including Tshwane, Cape Town and Buffalo City residents - face electricity price hikes of up to 15 percent from next month after 13 municipalities applied for above average tariff increases.
The National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) held public hearings on the municipalities' applications to consider submissions on the proposed increases above the 7.39 percent it approved for the 2014/15 financial year, which starts next month.
Nersa's Charles Hlebela said a decision on the municipalities' application would be taken before July 1, the implementation date for the hikes.
