Bathroom Trends that Are Making Waves in 2018

Category Property Maintenance & Costs

This is the perfect time to make sure your bathroom is perfectly appointed to suit your lifestyle.

A little creative thinking will open up a whole new world of bathroom possibilities. This is according to Liza Watermeyer, Visual Display Manager at Tile Africa.

Pattern and colour

The New Year brings with it a revival of colour and strong patterns. We have seen the encaustic type patterns on tiles for a while now, and these continue to provide features and interest to the bathroom.

From Mediterranean to vintage and Oriental themes, these patterns will also include more geometric designs. While some of the design inspiration comes from the past, much patterning is fashioned using nature as the muse.

These eclectic patterns are available in complementary or contrasting hues, and can be paired with white, grey or stone.

Patterns created within the tile layout are also gaining popularity. This is achieved by combining different size and shaped tiles to create a bespoke installation.

Mosaics in geometric form remain one of the easiest ways to add pattern and colour to your bathroom. These you can use on walls or the entire floor for a punch of interest. For example, not only are penny round shapes practical but they also offer design longevity.

You also want to look out for coloured vanity tops, basins and baths. However, black and white is a classic colour combination. Adding gold or black taps to your bathroom will bring this classic scheme into the spotlight and ensure an up-to-date aesthetic.

Mixing materials

This trend was partly born from the desire to conserve resources, where mixing and not necessarily matching finishes is the new approach.

Advancements in technology have also made it possible to design products that mix materials in a non-traditional way. Think glass basins and mixing marble or stone with wood and steel. The change in texture creates visual and tactile appeal.

Contrast is good, clash is even better. This way of combining different materials and finishes adds heaps of appeal. The design philosophy has a unique, individual spirit that encourages using what you have.

How you use space

Inspiration from spas, exotic holidays and boutique hotels are fuelling a new way to appoint the bathroom space as we try to improve our day-to-day experiences.

Bathroom furniture and fixtures now resemble those found in the rest of the home. Rethink your lighting options – consider using chandeliers and pendants which provide great ambience.

To take your bathroom to the next level, consider freestanding baths with a table for bathing essentials or a chair to help create the lifestyle.

His and hers basins and showers are essential to the space, while rainfall showers are the norm. A shower or bathroom leading into a private garden by way of French sliding or stacking doors is the ultimate in bathroom luxe. If this cannot be included in the budget, add as many plants as you can to improve the quality of the air and bring nature into your sanctuary.
