Where to Place Your Rugs for the Best Effect

Category Advice

A new rug doesn’t come cheap, so you don't want to waste money and end up with a rug that doesn't look right for the room.

Where the sofa is up against a wall, ensure that at least the front legs of the furniture are on the rug.

Once you understand the importance of choosing the right sized rug, you know that you can make an informed decision and select a rug that complements the space.

Rugs are a wonderful way to add texture and warmth underfoot. Here’s how to get the right sized rug for each room.

Living room

In a large room with a floating seating area, the rug should contain all the pieces, including front and back legs, with space around.

Where the sofa is up against a wall, ensure that at least the front legs of the furniture are on the rug.

Don’t use a too small rug that only covers the area under the coffee table. Your feet should always rest on the rug when sitting down.

Dining room

Choose a ‘generous’ rug that holds your table and chairs, even when they’re pulled out from under the table. It should have at least 60cm of extra room all round.

The same rules apply to a round table. The rug, whether a circle or rectangle, should extend well past the dining chairs.

Avoid a rug that is too small and barely contains the table and chairs.

If a rug is too small, guests might trip when pulling out a chair.

Bedroom

In a spacious bedroom, choose a rug that is large enough to hold the bed and provide extra width all round for walking.

A slightly smaller rug that sits just under any bedside tables or cabinets is also a must.

Another smart solution involves using two small rugs on either side of the bed. This works well if you have a desk or dresser on one side of the bed.

For a bedroom with a corner bed or a room with two single beds, choose a runner to use along the side of the bed.

Don’t place a small rug at the foot of the bed as it puts the room out of scale. You want comfort underfoot when you get out of bed.
