Strand at a glance

Leapfrog offers an excellent range of Strand property options. Strand (Afrikaans for beach) is widely considered to be one of the oldest holiday destinations not only on the Western Cape Coastline, but in South Africa. It is also one of the most popular areas, with excellent beaches and beautiful properties on offer. For decades, Strand was the retirement choice for many locals and of late, foreigners.

Some 300 years ago, Corporal Muller and eight soldiers of the Dutch East India Company crossed the Tweede Rivier (now called the Lourens River) and set foot on the famous white sand of the Melkbaai (Milk Bay) beach, Strand. At the time the region was inhabited by Strandlopers (Beach Combers). By 1800, Malay slaves who were Muslims, escaped from Cape Town and established the first settlement at Strand. Their subsistence was fishing and they built a mosque that still stands today. Strand’s first name was Mosterds Bay. It was then renamed Van Ryneveld’s Town, thereafter Hottentots Holland Strand, and then Somerset Strand and eventually Strand in 1937.

Strand has always been popular for holidaymakers seeking the ideal property in South Africa. It has a five km long pristine beach with soft white sand plus a Mediterranean climate with a cool sea breeze that often keeps the summer temperatures under control. Strand is 20 minutes away from Cape Town International Airport and 48 km from Cape Town CBD, to which it has a direct railway link. The many beachfront apartments and penthouses all along the beachfront offer fine investment opportunities. These Strand property developments include renovated seaside homes, townhouse developments, security complexes, under own title, sectional title, share-block, life-right ownership and various other retirement options. Strand has seven primary schools and four secondary schools from which to choose from.

Attractions and facilities within the Strand area include a vibrant CBD with a host of banks, shops, restaurants, pubs, supermarkets and other stores, as well as swimming pools, tidal pools, Melbaai beach, surfing spots, golf clubs, Helderberg Nature Reserve, Boland Hiking Trail, Helderberg Farm Trail, Dick Bent Bird Sanctuary, Lwandle Hostel Museum and the nearby attractions in Somerset West, Macassar and the Cape Winelands. Residents and holidaymakers alike can enjoy a wide range of activities in Strand, including whale watching during June and December, wine tasting, water sports, surfing, golf, fishing and many other things to see and do in this popular coastal resort.

Whether you have lived in a Strand property for years, have just moved in or want to pass by, or just wish to take some time off to explore this wonderful town, you will see why it is easy to understand how Strand property has become one of the most sought-after retirement destinations in South Africa.
