History

Richards Bay, a town in KwaZulu-Natal, is situated on a 30 square kilometre lagoon of the Mhlatuze River. It boasts one of the country's largest harbours and has the deepest natural harbour in the Southern hemisphere. Construction work began in 1972 and on 1 April 1976, the new harbour was opened. Over time, this resulted in the small fishing town changing into an industrial city.

Lifestyle

With its combination of leisure and industry, Richards Bay has a beauty of its own. Where do you get the opportunity to see a great big ship coming into the harbour channel, blowing its horn, with recreational yachts, kayaks and surf skis fleeing from its path? Add to that a hippo grazing in the forefront and you certainly have a unique experience. The Mzingazi Golf Estate is also home to many hippos and the odd crocodile. For greater game viewing the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve is only an hour’s drive away.

Richards Bay caters for an outdoor lifestyle with Alkantstrand Beach (ideal for swimming, surfing and kite boarding) located in Meerensee or Pelican Island, a more sedate expanse of water, ideal for younger children and families. Boat clubs are available to avid deep-sea fishermen, a skate park for youngsters and Boardwalk Inkwazi Mall for the more indoor types.

Reasons to invest in property in Richards Bay

Due to increased industry activities associated with the harbour, Richards Bay has a transient population, which is dependent on the wellbeing of local industry and the global economy. As a result, many inhabitants choose to rent, as jobs are often offered on a contract basis. For this reason, Richards Bay is a good option for investors.
