Melkbosstrand at a glance
About the Area
Leapfrog offers a range of Melkbosstrand property to suit all tastes and requirements, as it offers a seaside resort atmosphere in a safe and beautiful natural region. Melkbosstrand is named after the indigenous Melkbos (milk bush) tree, which is found in abundance on the Western Cape coastal region, as well as in the dry Karoo region.
A relatively new area for property in South Africa, Melkbosstrand was developed in 1924 and consisted of only holiday houses, a Post Office, a café and Die Damhuis, which was originally one of the outbuildings of the De Melkbosch farmstead. This area is a heritage site and now a lovely restaurant is located on this property.
Melkbosstrand is a small seaside village that offers many indoor and outdoor activities for residents who own Melkbosstrand properties. Due to the unique swell of the waves it is a very sought-after area for kite and wind surfers. Visitors to this area can enjoy the picturesque views of Table Mountain, Robben Island plus the most amazing sunsets whilst taking long leisurely walks on the beautiful beaches. Holidaymakers flock to Melkbosstrand even though the sea temperature is known to be very cold on the West Coast of the Cape Town property area. Every year from August until November it also is whale watching season, and whales are often spotted frolicking in the waves in the Melkbosstrand bay before they disappear to their breeding grounds further up the south coast where the waters are warmer.
The Koeberg Nature reserve offers safe picturesque walking and cycling trails. En-route you will see zebra, wildebeest and various different species of bok. The nature reserve also offers an abundance of bird life; so enjoy some bird watching while enjoying the fresh, crisp country air of Melkbosstrand.
Melkbosstrand beachfront has excellent à la carte restaurants offering live entertainment, beachside dining, cocktails and seafood such as fresh crayfish, as well as fish and mussels that are caught daily by the locals. There are also a number of informal family restaurants like the Spur and the Ostrich farm with its play park – these are popular with families with young kids. Shops such as Pick and Pay, Clicks, Melkbos Pharmacy, OK Foods, Seven Eleven, Pep Stores, Fashion World, and various other shops plus fast food outlets like Kentucky, Steers, Debonairs and the Local Melkbosstrand fish and chips shop are very popular and frequented by locals and tourist alike. There is also a local garden centre and a hardware store.
