Edenvale at a glance
Located on the East Rand in Gauteng, the well-loved town of Edenvale enjoys all the benefits of being positioned close to two major highways and the O.R. Tambo International Airport, yet remains a peaceful place with tree-lined streets and small-town charm.
Due to its central positioning and proximity to the Johannesburg CBD and airport, Edenvale has become a well-known part of Johannesburg and a sought-after residential zone. Located a mere 12km from the sparkling city of Sandton and 9km from the nearest Gautrain station, quaint comfort and unparalleled convenience make Edenvale a top choice for families and young professionals alike.
The colourful history of Edenvale dates all the way back to 1902 when the area was just a small post-Anglo Boer War settlement named Rietfontein. As one of many settlements to spring out around the Rietfontein Gold Mine, Edenvale was originally populated by Cornish mineworkers who settled in brick-lined wood and iron houses – some of which can still be seen today.
Edenvale’s residential housing is a mixed sort ranging from middle class zones in Eastleigh and Croyden to upper class areas such as Dowerglen and Edenglen. In the last ten years, the area north of Edenvale – Modderfontein – has experienced rapid growth, including the formation of two malls, Greenstone and Stoneridge, as well as a range of secure complexes and townhouses.
Leisure and entertainment is never far from your doorstep when residing in Edenvale, as the town is home to a sweeping assortment of shopping centres, restaurants and sporting facilities. Shopping enthusiasts will find themselves tickled pink by the amount of quality shops and malls in and around Edenvale. Eden Terrace shopping mall in the upmarket area of Edenglen is home to a massive Pick ‘n Pay while The Terraces and Karaglen Square boast firm favourites like the Woolworth’s Food Store, Clicks and Mugg & Bean. Other shopping spots include Linksfield Terrace, Dowerglen Plaza, The Glen Curv, Eden Meadows and the newly erected Greenstone and Stoneridge shopping centres.
Those with fitness on the mind will find their needs met, as Edenvale offers plentiful sporting and recreational facilities. Edenvale Action Cricket, Action Soccer and Indoor Beach Volleyball appeal to those with a passion for indoor sports while two golf clubs and two martial arts establishments ensure those with hobbies are fully catered for. In addition to the array of sports clubs, Edenvale caters to treadmill fans with an assortment of gym facilities including Curves – For Women, the Ultimate Fitness Centre and a fully equipped Virgin Active gymnasium in Edenglen.
Last, but certainly not least, Edenvale is home to a collection of 13 good schools ranging from public primary and high schools to specialised private schools.
